Typical Weight of Males: Adult males typically weigh between 150 to 250 pounds (68 to 113 kilograms).
Unique Attributes of Males: Male axis deer, also known as bucks, boast majestic antlers that can grow up to 36 inches (91 centimeters) in length. Their antlers are usually branched and have multiple points, adding to their impressive appearance.
Mating Season: Axis deer have a distinct mating season, which usually occurs between May and August. During this time, bucks actively compete for the attention of females, engaging in intense vocalizations, displays of dominance, and territorial behavior.
When is the best time to hunt Axis Deer in Texas?
The best time to hunt Axis Deer in Texas is typically during the rut or mating season, specifically from May through July. During this time, the Axis Deer experience their rutting season, also known as the breeding season, which makes the males more active and vocal. The temperatures during these months can be sweltering, however the morning and evenings tend to provide better hunting opportunities. Additionally, the vocalization of the males makes it easier to locate mature Axis Deer.
When is the hunting season for Axis Deer in Texas?
The hunting season for Axis Deer in Texas is open all year long. Unlike many other game species that have specific hunting seasons, Axis Deer hunting in Texas is not restricted to a particular time frame. This provides hunters with the flexibility to plan their hunts throughout the year. Since Axis Deer are considered an invasive species there are currently little to no regulations on these animals.
When are Axis Deer hard horned and when are their antlers velvet?
Axis deer are hard horned during the early summer to early fall months, typically from late April through August. During this period, the antlers of the Axis deer have reached their full growth and hardness. After the hard horn stage, the antlers shed and fall off. For velvet bucks the best time is usually March through April. Just before the Axis Deer rut begins the bucks will begin “scraping”, during this time, the velvet, which is a soft skin-like covering over the antlers, starts to dry and peel off, revealing the hardened antlers underneath. The shedding of the velvet exposes the polished, bone-like antlers that are characteristic of the Axis deer.
